Verse of the Day: Sell Everything and Give to the Poor

June 8, 2008

33 “Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it.

Luke 12:33 (NLT)

I don’t know about you, but I want to store up treasures in heaven rather than storing them up here on earth where thieves can steal it or where it can be lost in a second. Money is good for nothing if it’s not helping someone. I want to be in a position where I can bless others with what I have. That’s why God blesses givers. That’s what it means to walk in the overflow!

From the Life Application Bible:

Money seen as an end in itself quickly traps us and cuts us off from both God and the needy. The key to using money wisely is to see how much we can use for God’s purposes, not how much we can accumulate for ourselves. Does God’s love touch your wallet? Does your money free you to help others? If so, you are storing up lasting treasures in heaven. If your financial goals and possessions hinder you from giving generously, loving others, or serving God, sell what you must to bring your life into perspective.

great post – its good to have a reminder every once in a while (maybe daily?) that what we have is not ours, and that we need to keep our eyes on higher goals. thanks!
