16 Why is there in the hand of a fool the purchase price of wisdom, since he has no heart for it?

Proverbs 17:16 (NKJV)

16 It is senseless to pay tuition to educate a fool who has no heart for wisdom.

Proverbs 17:16 (NLT)

Isn’t it interesting that the Bible talks about not paying for someone’s education if that person doesn’t want to go to school. I think that parents get it wrong when they try and pay for their children’s education and they don’t have enough for their own retirement. It is foolish to pay for your children’s education when you don’t have enough to retire on.

As long as you instill the value of an education to them at a young age, they will want to get an education when they grow older. And they will probably study hard in high school to get the scholarships to help with tuition. There are also many education grants as well as student loans that can be taken out (which I consider “good debt”). However, there are no scholarships, grants, or loans for your retirement. Not one. So if you don’t save for your own retirement, there won’t be any money out there for you. That’s why it’s so important to save for retirement and then if you feel you have enough for a comfortable retirement, you can think about paying for your children’s education.
